This slim, subversive little volume from Czech master Bohumil Hrabal is equal parts tragic, absurd, and quietly explosive. Closely Watched Trains follows young railway apprentice Miloš Hrma through the crumbling last days of Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. With a libido outpacing his courage and a job that’s more about avoiding work than doing it, Miloš stumbles into adulthood against the backdrop of wartime bureaucracy and existential dread.

Funny in the way only Eastern Bloc despair can be funny, Hrabal’s writing veers between deadpan comedy and sudden brutality, all while whispering profound truths about power, impotence (literal and political), and the tiny, human rebellions that outlast regimes.

This is the kind of book that makes you laugh, then immediately feel weird about laughing. If Kafka got drunk with Bukowski in a train station, they might’ve written something like this.

Condition: Yellowed, well-thumbed, possibly coffee-stained — just like the era it came from. Smells faintly of resignation.
Crappy Old Books: We sell ’em like history remembers ’em — uneven, unforgettable, and always slightly sad.

Good condition, spine a bit slanted.
